Research funding in the health and social sciences has increasing become narrowed in scope, access, and priorities, stifling innovation that reflects the needs of our communities. In areas of mental health research that are "high risk" - those that challenge the boundaries of the scientific paradigm to measure, define, and advance the evidence - it is increasingly difficult to acquire funding. The Foundation for Excellence in Mental Health Care (FEMHC) aims to fill this gap left by government and other private funders.
In particular, the FEMHC has supported my work developing and testing new approaches to "lived experience" research and medication decision-making. Recently, the FEMHC passed a policy requiring that all funded projects have meaningful participation by people with psychiatric histories or who have experienced extreme states.
I invite you to join me in supporting bold new ideas!
